Upgrading the classic shepherd’s pie recipe with a Paleo twist. This paleo shepherd's pie uses sweet potato as the topping instead of regular potato.

 
 

Is Shepherd's Pie Healthy?

Of course, this paleo shepherd's pie is healthy. It brings together this warm, comforting dish utilizing pasture-raised lamb, a base of vegetables, and topped with a root vegetable mash.

You can have the flexibility of using leaner ground meat if you wish. You can additionally make it fattier by adding bone marrow or more nutrient-dense with diced liver and bone broth as the liquid with the tomato passata.

There is also the option to vary the topping. This paleo shepherd’s pie has sweet potato instead of regular potato. But you can also use a combination of carrot, celeriac, swede, or even butternut squash.

A hearty, nourishing, and comforting paleo shepherd's pie made using flavourful organic lamb mince topped with a creamy sweet potato mash.

Baked until bubbling on the top, this is sure to be loved by the entire family or as a meal prep for the week ahead. The lamb on its own here is a flavor bomb and is enhanced by using bone broth as a base along with fragrant herbs, rosemary, and thyme.

The sweet potato mash is incredible and is made creamy using a combination of coconut milk and ghee. (If you do not do dairy, then coconut oil is as good).

Enjoy on its own or with a side of broccoli and green beans. This paleo shepherds pie is sure to be a winning dish you will want to make time and time again.

Shepherds Pie: Lamb or Beef?

Technically speaking, shepherd's pie is traditionally made with ground lamb and not beef. Instead, the beef version is called cottage pie. Cottage and shepherd’s pie have similarities and can also be exchanged for one another or even a mixture similar to how the Italians occasionally use pork and beef for their meatballs. 

You could also use buffalo, bison, wild boar, or elk, and venison.

 
 

The Recipe

Paleo Shepherd’s Pie Ingredients

For the ground lamb base:

  • 1 tbsp ghee, melted

  • 800g organic lamb mince (15% fat)

  • 4 garlic cloves, minced 

  • 2 spring onions, green only, sliced

  • 1 cup carrots, diced

  • 1 cup Brussels sprouts, sliced

  • 1 cup beef or lamb bone broth

  • 2 tbsps tomato paste

  • 1 small handful of thyme

  • 1 small handful of rosemary

  • Icelandic or Celtic sea salt to taste

  • Freshly ground organic black pepper to taste

Sweet potato topping:

  • 4 large sweet potatoes, skin peeled, diced

  • 2/3 cup coconut milk

  • 2 tbsps ghee, melted

  • Icelandic or Celtic sea salt to taste

  • Freshly ground organic black pepper to taste

  • Fresh flat leaf parsley, finely chopped, to garnish

Steps

Beef mince:

  1. Preheat oven to 190C

  2. In a large bowl warm ghee

  3. Add mince and use a slotted spoon to soften.
    Season with salt and pepper and cook on medium heat until browned

  4. Add garlic and onion, stir to combine, and cook for 2-3 mins until softened

  5. Add carrots and Brussels sprouts and cook long enough for carrots to soften

6. Add tomato paste, thyme, and rosemary and stir to combine

7. Add broth and simmer long enough for the liquid to be absorbed

Sweet potato topping:

8. Add potatoes to salted boiling water and cook until softened. Drain liquid once cooked

9. Add coconut milk and ghee and stir the mixture together

10. Blend until smooth and creamy

To assemble:

11. Transfer mince to a baking dish 

12. Add the sweet potato topping

13. Transfer to oven and bake for 20 mins. Once cooked garnish with parsley and enjoy.
